英語の言葉遊び？or Linguistic Humor?

　川越のMasa です。以前から皆さんに紹介したかった留学中に読んで面白かったある英文記事をずっと捜していて見つ

からずあきらめていました。またそのこともすっかり忘れていました。ところがゴールデンウイーク中に不要になった本

や資料を整理している時に、その中の見開きに偶然発見しました。（これはよくあることですね。(*´∀｀*)ｱﾊﾊ）今回はそ

れを紹介したいと思います。

 

English Is the Creasiest Language               

 

We’ll begin with a box and the plural is boxes;

 

But the plural of ox should be oxen not oxes.

 

Then one fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,

 

Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.

 

You may find a lone mouse or nest full of mice;

 

Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

 

If the plural of man is always called men

 

Why shouldn’t the plural of pan be called pen?

 

If I spoke of my foot and show you my feet,

 

And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?

 

If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,

 

Why shouldn’t the plural of booth be called beeth?

 

Then one may be that, and three would be those,

 

Yet hat in the plural would never be hose.

 

And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.

 

We speak of brother and also of brethren.

 

But though we say mother, we never say methren.

 

Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,

 

But imagine the feminine, she, shis and shim.

 

So English I fancy you will agree,

 

Is the craziest language you ever did see.

           （英語って、なんてへんてこ！）

 

まずは「箱（box）」。複数なら「ボックスィズ（boxes）」でしょ？

 

でも「牛（ox）」が複数だと、「オッスィズ」じゃなく「オクスン（oxen）」。

 

鳥は一羽で「グース（goose）」。じゃあ二羽なら？ 「ギース（geese）」だって。

 

けど「ムース（moose）」は何匹いても、「ミース（meese）」じゃない。不思議だよね。

 

ネズミは「マウス（mouse）」、たくさんいたら「マイス（mice）」なのに、

「家（house）」が複数になっても、「ハイス（hice）」じゃなくて「ハウズィズ（houses）」。

 

「男（man）」の複数は「メン（men）」って言うなら、

 

「鍋（pan）」が複数なら「ペン（pen）」でもいいんじゃない？

 

「足（foot）」が「フィート（feet）」になるのなら、

 

「ブーツ（boot）」が二つで「ビート（beet）」になっても良さそうなのに。

 

「歯（tooth）」は「ティース（teeth）」、だったら

 

「ブース（booth）」の複数も「ビース（beeth）」でいいでしょ？

 

「that（一つ）」が三つになれば「those（それら）」なのに、

 

「帽子（hat）」が増えたって「ホーズ（hose）」にはならない。

 

「猫（cat）」が複数なら「キャッツ（cats）」なのに、「コーズ（cose）」とは言わない。

 

「兄弟（brother）」には「brethren」なんて特別な言い方があるけど、

 

「母（mother）」には「methren」なんて聞いたこともない。

 

「he, his, him」は男の人、

 

じゃあ女の人は「she, shis, shim」？　そんなの聞いたことない！

 

ね、やっぱり英語って、

 

一番へんてこな言葉だと思わない？

の詩（記事: The Spokesman-Reviewの中のコラムの一部だと思います。）を読んで私は納得させられ、思わず笑ってし

まいました。３０年以上も前のことですが。今もそうですが。Amiekeさんに見せたら、「面白い。」と言っていました。

彼女によるとこういった Linguistic Humor は新聞や、今ならSNSなどによく投稿されているということです。皆さんは

どう思われましたか。
